Karla's Rose in the Website
Karla had requested a rose as part of the design in her
new website and I had been looking at photos and stock art
for something to fit the bill, but nothing seemed right.
I 'd been talking with Wendy Waldman on the phone and in
swapping stories about what we had been up to, I told her
about Karla's site I was working on and she offered to draw
a rose for it. Not knowing Wendy's style of drawing, I had
doubts this was going fit with my idea of the site.
The first rose was vertical and not what I needed so I got
very specific and told her I needed something very horizontal
and flat. At the time, my plan was to use it between paragraphs
on the main page. In December of 2002, Wendy sent a high-resolution
version of this image by email and I liked it right away.
It looks very natual while also being in the long, narrow
form I needed.

Since the website has a teal green background, I knew I
needed to remove Wendy's original background for it to work,
and I did that with Photoshop.

That looked good, but it seemed a bit two-dimensional without
the backgroundl, so I added a computer generated drop shadow
and that gave it the look I wanted. I liked it so much that
it became a theme that I used throughout the site.

The final version was resized and made with a transparent
background to blend in with the color of the web pages.
Thanks Wendy!
