What's New

A clouded vague possibility of a distant rumor
comes true...

And the rumor has come true. This third collection of music to be released by Bryndle ships on December 15th. Bryndle - "Live at Russ and Julie's House Concert" is the newest collection from Karla Bonoff, Kenny Edwards and Wendy Waldman. The collection of songs were recorded at the last Bryndle show and it was their first performance together in four years. The CD ships on December 15th and pre-orders are being taken at the Bryndle Store.

There have been live albums recorded in huge stadiums, large auditoriums, big clubs, even small jazz clubs. The sound of the building adds a lot to the feel of a live album. The concept of a professional multi-track recording at such an intimate affair is unprecedented . The sound of a house concert is a completely different than most live recordings as it was recorded at Russ and Julie's living room on the weekend of November 16th and 17th (2002) with nearly 100 people in the close confines of a personal residence. As Kenny said, there is no reverb bouncing off the back of the house. It's being absorbed by the small surroundings and people sitting just a few feet await from the musicians..All of that adds to the flavor which is preserved in these new recordings. Fans came from as far away as Florida, New York and New Orleans for these shows and the waiting list for seats was long. . Bryndle hadn't played together since 1997 and there was a feeling this was a once-in-a-time occurrence. Just over a year later, the group still hasn't played another live show but now we've for this collection of Kenny, Karla and Wendy playing together one more time.

2003, into 2004 - Bryndle on Back-burner

As expected, 2003 has turned out to be fairly low-key year for Bryndle, as a group. There have been no band shows and except for the middle release of the House Concert CD, there has been little activity with the band.

Karla Bonoff and Kenny Edwards have been out on the road, throughout 2003, crisscrossing America on short tours. Kenny has also played solo shows in the Southern California area and in Colorado and at the Kate Wolf Festival in Northern California. Wendy Waldman toured for Taylor Guitar and performed at songwriting schools, music stores and clubs on the East and West Coasts - and Colorado. Wendy also produced a number of projects at her Long House Studio. Karla recorded a new version of "The Water is Wide" for a commercial running only on Japanese television where her "Best Of" CD was released at the end of 2002. Karla is planning to tour Japan in 2004.

On the web, Karla got a brand new web site in 2003. Wendy got both a new webmaster and a new web site. Kenny's site has had some major additions. I think there will probably be a new updated Bryndle website in 2004.

Karla Bonoff planning a live album

Karla is planning a live album, probably for release sometime in 2004. A show in Thousand Oaks, California and two shows at Wolf Trap in Virginia were recorded. Kenny Edwards, producer of Karla's first three albums is producing this effort. For those recorded dates, Karla's band was expanded with the addition of guitarist Nina Gerber and percussionist Scott Babcock. There is no firm release date on this. When I last spoke with Karla before the taping of the first show, she told me that she wanted to listen to the recordings and make sure she's happy with the results before rushing a release out. There are tentitive plans to record additional dates in the Bay Area in April with the expanded band.. It's clear that both Karla and Kenny were invigorated by playing with the larger band. For a sampling of what Nina Gerber sounds like playing with Karla and Kenny, check out the "sounds" page on Karla's site for a nice mp3 of "Please Be the One." This was recorded in March of 2003 and was the first time Nina had played with Karla and Kenny.
